Synopsis: Navigating one’s queerness is a lifelong odyssey! Three-time Prague Fringe Award nominee John Arthur Sweet makes his first appearance at the On the Edge Fringe with an autobiographical two-part mélange of theatrical monologue, storytelling, and spoken word. This is the tale of a gay, bullied smalltown Ontario kid who found refuge in theatre. The show is in two stand-alone parts: Part I (Childhood) and Part II (Adulthood). You don’t need to see both parts, or to see them in order!
Content warning: Numerous pop culture references from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.
Reviews of the show from the 2023 Prague Fringe:
“I wholeheartedly recommend Outside, in the Laneway, Under the Stars … for its captivating storytelling, evocative imagery, and the intimate glimpse it offers into a transformative journey of self-discovery. John Arthur Sweet’s performance is both tender and powerful, leaving the audience with a profound appreciation for the moments of grace that shape our lives.” (Megan Meunier, Prague Youth Theatre blog)
“It is not often we are offered such an intimate glimpse into an artist’s personal journey. Sweet is truly a mosaic of all that he has encountered and he has framed this mosaic for the world to see, offering the opportunity to gain just a little bit more valuable understanding.” (Sarah Kher-Bek, Fringe Binge website)
