Summer Youth Positions

WE ARE CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2024

Introduction: ON THE EDGE Fringe Festival is seeking amazing employees for our 2022 summer season to work with our staff and volunteers to help make this year’s Fringe Festival better than ever!

The ON THE EDGE Fringe Festival is dedicated to the dissemination, production, and prosperity of independent arts and artists. Our festival creates a unique environment where the arts thrive entertaining our region as we move towards the future. As one of the few arts festivals in the Nipissing region, ON THE EDGE Fringe Festival provides a critical role to the public and to the arts community providing professional theatre, spoken word, visual arts and multi-arts opportunities.

Working with ON THE EDGE Fringe Festival will allow participants to be part of an enthusiastic team that is united in their love for art, theatre, and all things Fringe. Our summer youth program centres on teamwork, respect, and creativity, and we welcome employees of all backgrounds, abilities, and strengths. This year we have only one job position available: Festival Organizer. In some years we also have Artist positions. Find out more about each position below.

Eligibility: These positions are funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. To be eligible for employment, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Festival Organizer

Number of Positions: 2
Contract Length: 8 Weeks
Hours Per Week: 30
Hourly Wage: $16.75 per hour
Location: North Bay, Ontario

The task of coordinating a festival requires working with a group of people who are reliable, resourceful and have a formidable work ethic. This position will enable the youth to develop these skills and demonstrate the importance of being able to identify these qualities in others. Under guidelines and supervision provided by festival staff the youth will help develop a strategic plan of how to run the festival and then be tasked with carrying out their collective ideas and objectives. Successes and challenges will be reviewed and discussed on a regular basis to assess and alter the strategic plan as needed to ensure the festival runs as smoothly as possible, to navigate challenges more effectively in the future, and to identify and resolve conflicts. This will not only cultivate skills pertaining to working with a team of people towards shared goals, but will also provide techniques that can be used in any aspects of festival or event coordination, theatre production, or other similar tasks.

Working with the Artistic Director, the Festival Organizer’s tasks and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • working as a team towards festival activities;
  • helping to organize and promote outreach activities;
  • participating in the festival’s marketing strategies such as promotion through word-of-mouth, print (flyers, posters, etc.), and social media;
  • engaging with festival artists, patrons, sponsors and volunteers;
  • providing box office and technical support during the festival; and
  • helping to coordinate and facilitate digital and/or in-person festival events.

Candidates: This job position is ideally suited for youth interested in studying or pursuing a career in the arts (especially theatre or other performing arts), festival or event coordination, or other related fields.

The Artists will engage in a variety of professional development activities during the summer, engaging in theatre training, arts activations, community festivals and events, performance presentations and/or creation incubators. They will work on-site and/or remotely with festival staff, volunteers, and contracted local theatre professionals to gain experience and skills in areas such as theatre arts, performance art, script writing, idea creation, collaborative learning, ensemble-building, acting, stage production, and event coordination, and will be expected to support the organization’s programming and outreach activities.

The Artists will work closely with the Education Coordinator to establish independent work plans for both group actions and personal theatre development. Working with their supervisor, other ON THE EDGE Fringe Festival staff, and guest artists, the youth will participate in the development of a collaborative performance piece for public presentation at the ON THE EDGE Fringe Festival, and will be responsible for contributing ideas in group discussions, developing script and production elements, and working as a team to bring their work from its initial conception to a fully realized production.
